We meet people with hearing disorder everywhere: in the metro, shopping centers and even in our RSSU. But, unfortunately, we can’t communicate with them, because our knowledge is limited. And this is not the only drawback that appears due to the lack of sign language in our lives. We asked the assistant professor of department of social work, the translator-dactylologist of the second qualification category Olga Afanasyeva and the head of the university laboratory of the Russian sign language, the translator-dactylologist of the first qualification category Valentin Kamnev, to tell why people who can speak and hear need to learn the sign language.
"First, it helps to develop your intelligence, the breadth of views and the opportunity to receive interesting information. The language of the language develops memory, speed of reaction, improves the processing of information. Because it's manual dexterity. There is one center that is responsible for gestures and for verbal speech. Accordingly, when studying sign language, we develop the language qualities of our native speech. And of course, it helps us communicate with people with disabilities. It is very interesting, because this world is different, closed for many people. But this world is very diverse and rich" - says Valentine Kamneva.
"Body language and sign language are different things. Body language is our gesticulation while talking, and sign language is the language of the deaf. Like, for example, the same English" - says Olga Afanasyeva.
Sign language and body language are absolutely different, so it is wrong to unite them.
There are different opinions about the study of sign language: someone thinks that it can be learned well with ought any teachers, someone has another opinion. Our experts have different points of view, but there is one thing they all agree on:
"You can learn from video or books, but if you do not put your hand right, there will be clumsy letters, numbers and gestures. You may miss some peculiarities in the reproduction of the gesture and say a completely different word, "said the associate professor of the department of social work.
According to the head of the university laboratory of the Russian sign language, the main difficulty in studying is the lack of a melody of the word. Because when learning a foreign language, we remember the sound of words, and in the gesture it is necessary to have motor memory, very good coordination and a quick assessment of the situation in order to successfully master it.
RSSU is a social institution. There are all conditions for training people with disabilities. In addition, we have special courses of the Russian sign language. The courses are fee paying and quite long, but, compared to others, the prices here are the most reasonable, and the education is very high-quality.
"We have very qualified teachers. We are in demand all over Russia and we often go on business trips because RGSU teachers are asked to teach the Russian sign language" – said Valentine Kamneva .
Teaching those who want to study a sign language, the RSSU teachers find an approach to each student: they will personally guide, hold your hands and show how it should look like. No one remains deprived of attention. And this is a huge plus of classes at our university.

Teaching those who want to study sign language, the RSSU teachers find an approach to each student: they will direct each student, hold the hands of their students, put their hands in a correct position and show how it should look like ideally. No one leaves out in the cold. And this is a huge advantage of classes at our university.
An important part of the education is consistency. Olga Afanasyeva told about the training system at RSSU. It lies in the fact that students are taught dactyl (alphabet or finger alphabet) in the first instance, then there is a study of topics, starting with such as "Calendar", "Common Words". And with each lesson, the topics become more complicated and more interesting. The courses are conducted either by experienced translators or by sign language speakers.
The mentality of deaf and hearing Russian people is very different. For example, hearing people do not have to wave their hands, and for deaf people it's absolutely normal, since the amplitude of the waving shows the intonation of the person. We have been told since childhood: "Do not stamp like an elephant!" However, sometimes you need to knock or stamp to call a deaf or an acoustically challenged person.
Another feature of the language of the deaf is the lack of paronyms. We can use one word in different meanings, but in a sign language one gesture can bear only one meaning. It is important not to confuse them; otherwise you can make a poor showing and remain misunderstood.
«Sign language is a language of emotions. A person becomes more expressive when studying a sign language. As a rule, those who start learning the sign language require pills from greed in the future, because they want more and more. This is a very unusual and interesting language. Delicious". Valentina Kamneva shared her opinion with a smile.
The world of sign language is full of mysteries and amazing things. Unfortunately, a small number of people study this language. If you want to plunge into the world and the mentality of deaf people and know all its delights - do not hesitate and sign up for courses at RSSU.
